Considering Endoscopic Thoracis Sympathectomy For Hyperhidrosis?

In case you are considering an ETS surgery for Hyperhidrosis, read this first and understand that this is not the preferred, safe or only way to treat your condition. This truly is the last resort that should be tried only after careful consideration of the costs (and not just financial costs, but the risks as well) vs. benefit. In our opinion, very few patients will find that the costs/risks of surgery outweigh the benefits.

Hyprhidrosis Surgery is expensive

In any event, if you are wondering how much the Endoscopic Thoracis Sympathectomy will cost you, this is the where you will find the answer. Before we go there, a few important note about cost of Endoscopic Thoracis Sympathectomy Surgery for hyperhidrosis:

  • It is an expensive procedure because it requires a cardiothoracic surgery.
  • The cost vary a lot by the provider
  • The costs vary a lot by the country – you may be able to find a much cheaper alternative in countries like India with similar outcome quality
  • The procedure is not always covered by insurance providers. So you should call them to check if they would cover the surgery (in some cases, they may want you to try other options before going for surgery). There are smart ways to go about talking to your insurance about Hyperhidrosis Surgery, and we will cover them in a separate post.

Having said the above, the cost for the ETS surgery for Hyperhidrosis in US will be somewhere in the range of $10,000 to $20,000 inclusive of the surgery and anesthesia. You may need medication if you develop side effect – the cost of such medication is not included in the estimate. A variant of the ETS surgery called Micro ETS surgery is a bit more expensive and costs in the range of $15,000 to $25,000 depending on the number of factors. These costs are ofcourse indicative and you may find significant variance depending on the provider, hospital and location.

  2. I can’t believe that this is still so expensive. What with all the bad publicity these ETS surgeries have been getting for the past several years (even being forbidden in some locales!), I would hope that they would at least lower the price for all those patients who are still considering doing this.
On the other hand, maybe it’s not bad if they get discouraged by the price. My colleague had ETS surgery done on him, and the side effects only made his hyperhidrosis worse than before. 🙁

    • I did a ETS in Italy without any cost. I did this 10 years ago, I was suffering hands palm HYPERIDROSIS, was terrible for me going to anyplace, hands are so important in the daily basis. Now I feel really good, my hand dont sweat anymore since 10 years ago but sweat needs to go somewhere so instead of having sweaty hands now my back sweat a lot when i do any activity. well is better than having my hands sweating. I wish I could get rid of sweating but is like that.

  3. I am astonished about the exorbitant costs of ETS surgery in the US. In our clinic in Italy, costs and fees for ETS have risen over the past 20 years, but still a patient will not spend more than 3100 EUR (around 3500 USD) for the whole treatment, and around 4200 EUR for ETS and Lumbar Sympathectomy (hands and feet) in one single procedure.
