A study: ETS dislocates sweat but does not reduce it

Here is the link to an old, but interesting study I found. It is about upper dorsal thoracoscopic sympathectomy and its effects on total amount of body perspiration. You don't have to read the whole study, the abstract itself is interesting enough.

        http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11193740

So, what do you think? Do you know of any studies that produced different results? Considering how many people report strong compensatory sweating after ETS, the results of linked study are barely a surprise… I understand there can't be tons of these studies, because there aren't that many people who underwent ETS, but still I wish there was even more scientific evidence, to get this mystery solved once and for all – what exactly does ETS do to your body?

Wow, I am not surprised, not surprised at all. 🙄
It makes me shudder that I even ever considered doing an ETS. And I mean no disrespect to people who need to do it, and who did it. It is just that the whole snip snap surgery thing is scaring me to bits! 😯

Thanks for posting that study Elena, but I think that many hyperhidrosis sufferers, who really need to do this surgery, will still go through with it, despite these results. Even if it does nothing but dislocate excessive sweating, ETS could still be helpful for some patients. I mean, a surgeon will need to get rid of sweaty hands, a marathon runner will probably have problems with sweaty feet, and so on. Well, you catch my meaning. Some people would rather risk excessive sweating (compensatory sweating) on some random part of the body, as long as they can keep the target area dry.
        Don't you agree?

I am a 30-year-old woman who feels totally out of place. I started off sweating, (and I mean, excessive sweating) on my hands and feet and I had the ETS surgery. Immediately after the surgery, while lying in the hospital bed, I awakened with a sweaty butt, back, and legs. The doctor said it was compensatory sweating and it would go away. I continued to sweat and eventually I requested the clamps used to block the nerves be removed. The doctor said the nerve should regenerate itself and the compensatory sweating would stop and my hands and feet would probably continue to sweat.

I have different experience regarding this. It’s now been a month post surgery, and the results and recovery have been going amazingly well! I was completely fine and resumed all tough physical activity, with intense boxing training 2 hours a day 4 times a week. This regiment continues up to today and there have been no problems of sweaty palms whatsoever. As for compensatory sweating, I now sweat more on my chest, back and legs, but this only happens when I engage in exercise and I do not sweat doing normal activities such as walking or studying. All in all, it’s been everything the doctor has promised. I would definitely recommend this surgery to anyone suffering from sweaty palms as it really changed my life. One thing to note is I opted for the burning of the nerve instead of clamping the nerve, this is important as the surgeon has said that complete burning of the nerve is the more recommended form of treatment.

        HAI,
Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS) is a minimally invasive procedure available to treat hyperhidrosis. Using very small incisions, the sympathetic chain is cut or clamped to eliminate the excessive sympathetic nerve activity. Using this approach, the procedure may be done on an outpatient basis with quicker recovery and less scarring than open surgery. The procedure is highly effective in eliminating excessive sweating of the hands in over 98 percent of patients. In addition, the risk of complications is very low. ETS also can be applied in selected patients with axillary hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating of the armpits.
