When I treat myself I feel virtually nothing, and yet the galvanometer shows that the current is passing through. Is this normal?

Yes, it is normal. Some people feel strong sensations at low levels of current, while others feel practically nothing. What is important is the amount of current that passes. For an adult, the ideal treatment intensity is between 15 to 20 mA, but this is not always possible.
